Vhagar is one of the most powerful dragons to have ever lived, so you should read this entire article to learn more about its history, previous dragon riders, and its ultimate battle style in Dance of the Dragons.
Who is Vhagar?
Vagar is a female dragon belonging to House Targaryen who took part in Aegon's war victory. In its prime, the Vagar was said to be as large and powerful as Balerion the Black Dread Dragon; It dies at age 180 during the Dance of the Dragons battle.
After Baelon’s death, Vhagar was claimed by Laena, who loved to fly on the great she-dragon’s back. By this time, Vhagar was the oldest, biggest, and arguably the most powerful of the Targaryen dragons.
After Lena's death, many Targaryens wanted to claim Vagar, including Rhaena. However, Prince Aemond, who was teased for not having any dragons, tamed and sat on one when he was ten years old.
Vhagar in the Civil War
When the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, began, Aemond sided with his mother, Alicent Hightower, and brother King Aegon II. Early in the war, Vhagar and Aemond fought Prince Lucerys and his dragon Arrax.
As the start of all-out war is about to begin, Lucerys is sent by his family to Storm's End to seek an alliance with the Baratheons. But already there seeking alliance, Aemond will be there with his dragon Vhagar.
The young prince and his smaller dragon were no match for Aemond and the mighty Vhagar.
After leaving Storm’s End, however, Aemond and his dragon Vhagar chase down his cousin and kill both Lucerys and his own dragon, Arrax. As revenge for losing his own eye, Aemond removes both of Luke’s eyes in return.
Aemond and Vhagar fought in several other battles during the war, killing the dragon Meleys and her rider Princess Rhaenys.
Unfortunately, while Aemond and Vhagar were unhurt in the battle, Aegon II was seriously injured. This meant Aemond had to step in as prince regent and rule in his brother’s stead, and the unprepared prince made a colossal mistake.
Vhagar’s death
Aemond traveled with Vagar to Harrenhal, hoping to defeat the Daemon Targaryen's army, but upon arriving in the Riverlands finds the castle abandoned. At the same time, learning that Daemon had moved his forces to take over King's Landing, Enraged, Emond began a one-man war in the Riverlands, using Vagar to burn everything he could.
The battle above God's Eye Lake was a fierce battle between Vhagar and Daemon's Caraxes dragon.
The battle ended with the two dragons plunging into the water below. During the descent, Daemon jumped onto Vhagar mid-air and stabbed Aemond through his eye just as the dragons crashed into the lake.
Aemond and Vhagar’s bodies are found years later and pulled from the lake with Daemon’s sword, Dark Sister, still protruding from Aemond’s eye socket.
Meanwhile, Daemon’s dragon Caraxes managed to drag himself from the water after the battle, only to die in front of the walls of Harrenhal while Daemon’s body was never found.
