The Substance (2024) – Movie full Story and detailed review

A Dark and Twisted Tale of Beauty, Obsession, and Horror

"The Substance" is a 2024 body horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat, renowned for her work on "Revenge." The movie stars Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-celebrated actress and longtime host of a popular TV aerobics show. Facing the harsh realities of aging in Hollywood, Elisabeth becomes desperate to reclaim her youthful allure.

Plot Summary

On her fiftieth birthday, Elisabeth accidentally discovers that her TV show is being canceled due to her age. Distraught, she suffers a car accident after witnessing one of her promotional billboards being taken down. While recovering in the hospital, she receives a mysterious USB drive labeled "The Substance," advertising a serum that promises to create a younger, more beautiful version of the user, with both versions remaining connected. After some contemplation, Elisabeth decides to try the product and injects the "Activator," leading to the birth of a younger version of herself from an incision in her back.

This younger version, adopting the name "Sue," is instructed by the enigmatic provider to inject herself daily with a "Stabilizer" serum extracted from the unconscious Elisabeth. The two must swap places every seven days without exception: one remains unconscious while the other experiences the world. Sue quickly ascends to stardom with her own aerobics show, reaching new heights of fame and admiration. In contrast, Elisabeth leads a solitary life, maintaining her body solely to produce the serum necessary for Sue.

The disparity between Elisabeth and Sue becomes increasingly pronounced; Elisabeth begins to overeat and drink excessively, while Sue becomes addicted to extracting more Stabilizer to prolong her time in the spotlight, causing Elisabeth to age rapidly. Elisabeth contacts the provider, who informs her that she can either continue the body swaps or terminate the program, but neither option will restore her former appearance. Desperate, Elisabeth allows Sue to extract the serum from her unconscious body for three uninterrupted months. Sue is slated to host a highly anticipated New Year's Eve show but runs out of serum the day before, forcing her to swap bodies. To her horror, Elisabeth is now hairless and deformed.

In desperation, Elisabeth disguises herself in heavy clothing and informs the provider that she wishes to terminate the program. She retrieves the provided substance for this purpose but, still yearning for admiration, stops short of injecting Sue and revives her, leading to their first face-to-face confrontation. Upon seeing the nearly depleted serum, Sue retaliates by killing Elisabeth before heading to the New Year's show. Unable to stabilize herself due to Elisabeth's death, Sue's body rapidly deteriorates backstage. In a frantic attempt to save herself, Sue defies the provider's instructions and tries to create a new version of herself with the remaining Activator, inadvertently creating "Monstro Elisasue," a grotesque amalgamation of both. Monstro takes Sue's place, horrifying the live audience during the broadcast. The terrified spectators descend into violent panic, culminating in Monstro's decapitation, whose head grotesquely regenerates and explosively disintegrates. As the audience is drenched in Monstro's blood, the creature escapes outside before collapsing into a heap of entrails. Elisabeth's original face emerges as a slimy mass from the remains and crawls to her neglected star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, finding solace as she positions herself on the star before melting away. The next day, her bloody remnants are cleaned away by a street sweeper.
